Saturday Kitchen Week 29 

Besides the rather tantalising image of Cleopatra bathing in golden saffron water, this decadent spice conjures up fantasies of the Silk Road, rich eastern dishes, and indulgence of the highest order. Nowadays though it is actually very affordable, as only a tiny amount is needed to add that unique warmth of colour and strange, hay like flavour (with a slightly bizarre metallic hint). For me, family gatherings have so often been marked by gathering around a great big communal paella dish, with those gorgeous yellow grains punctuated by bright roasted vegetables and the fruits of the sea. Never being especially fond of seafood, the highlight for me was instead being granted the real honour of soaking the saffron, and seeing those bursts of colour seep out from those magical little strands.
